Apprentices Build Their First Piece of Furniture
It's already a tradition: As in previous years, the third-year apprentices in 2023 once again designed and built their own piece of furniture. No easy task: the concept, planning and implementation have to be organized and discussed together as a group. Instructor Thomas Redweik was always on hand to advise the joinery apprentices, but otherwise kept a low profile.
In the end, Anna, Frederik, Heinrich, Jacob, Lennart and Peter succeeded in creating a very special piece of furniture. And they recorded the process on video (see next slide) – also an essential part of the tradition.
This time, the result is a sideboard that can stand against the wall or freely in a room. The design impresses with a charming interplay of classic and modern design forms. The furniture is made of both solid oak and MDF panels covered with oak veneer. The curved moulded parts were glued with bendable plywood using a vacuum press. The drawers are hand-jointed, recessed and fitted with push-to-open full-extension runners. The doors with handle profiles are held shut with veneered magnets. The apprentices gave it the finish touch with a silk-matt clear lacquer.
At the KarriereStart career trade fair in Dresden in January 2024, the sideboard was the perfect showpiece to introduce interested visitors to joinery training at Deutsche Werkstätten.
