Appreciating good craftsmanship

The Chinese market is interesting for Deutsche Werkstätten on different levels. Of course there are many potential clients who can afford high quality interior fit-outs. But we should not forget the significance of China’s vast cultural heritage and tradition of skilled craftsmanship. Gong Chen, who together with Tobias Bootz is responsible for DW China, explains: ‘Everybody has heard about Chinese porcelain, silk and wood carvings. And in recent years some Chinese cities have witnessed a renaissance of the arts and crafts, particularly among the younger generation. We can, therefore, expect good conditions for the appreciation of skilled cabinetry work. Whilst there are carpenters and wood carvers in China, we still need to explain the difference of skills needed for high quality interiors as there are no artisan cabinetmakers.’

There is more appreciation for a piece of porcelain than for a beautifully finished room. We have, therefore, defined it as our task to change perceptions. The beautifully handcrafted wall panelling deserves the same level of appreciation as a valuable piece of porcelain. Overall, the desire for quality and luxury products is certainly there. The popularity of Western luxury brands, for example, is evident for all to see. The fully custom-designed one-off products that Deutsche Werkstätten can supply may need some more time to assert themselves in the market. Perhaps it will be the shared arts and crafts tradition that will prove to be the connection. Otherwise there is always the visit to Hellerau!
